Our company did a presentation about English as a world language and these are the most important facts about it:

Explanation

learned as second language; used in international organizations, politics, business, education; wide geographical distribution


Colonialism

15th and 16th century – Age of Discovery; colonies in America and Asia, Africa, Pacific; England was the leading colonial power; 1783 – War of Independence – lost America


William the Conqueror

* 1028 in Falaise (France); 1066 – 1087 King of England;

everybody tried to speak French – mixed up

Example: wedding – marriage


Denglish

like originally German; very popular; used in TV-Spots or shop windows

old people don‘t understand

Example: sale – Ausverkauf
